Lovoy Products for SMS Simplification

Lovoy Training Inc. is a research and development company based in Canada.
The company develops and maintains a method for SMS simplification.

What Lovoy Offers

Lovoy helps companies simplify their Safety Management System (SMS) and improve how it works in daily operations.

The work helps companies redesign their SMS using their own people, rather than external writers, so the system is not difficult to use.

Lovoy does not sell software and does not write SMSs on behalf of clients.

SMS Simplification

Many SMSs are difficult to use in daily work. Over time, the system loses sight of the end user. Procedures become hard to follow. People stop using parts of the system or skip it. SMS simplification removes filler and poor structure. It does not remove facts, rules, or requirements.

This article explains how an SMS can remain user friendly and compliant.

Example from real SMS simplification. Many fragmented documents became two usable files, with fewer words and more facts. Shared with permission from Excelerate Energy.

The Lovoy method focuses on SMS usability and how people find what they need. It includes a controlled language with clear rules for wording, structure, and consistency. These rules support plain language and a clear structure, so people can use the SMS in daily work. The method makes the SMS more process oriented and more risk based.

New industry codes and standards now stress usability, including SIRE 2.0, dry bulk standards, and inspector questionnaires.  These requirements state that a safety management system shall support users. They also require that the SMS remains easy to use. Auditors and inspectors now review SMS usability. They no longer check only for written requirements.

Industry codes and inspection standards now require SMS usability, clarity, and accessibility. Examples include SIRE 2.0, COSWOP, DBMS, and RightShip.

Lovoy has used this method in shipping for over 16 years. The method draws on experience from aviation. In aviation, usability and clarity play a central role.

License to Use the Lovoy Method for SMS Simplification

After training, your company receives a license to use the Lovoy method internally.

More than 16 years ago, Lovoy was the first to recommend SMS simplification in shipping. At the time, the topic was controversial. Over time, insurers, industry organizations, auditors, and inspectors came to recognize the Lovoy approach.

Today, this recognition extends to many inspectors and auditors, who see the Lovoy method as a strong starting point during inspections and audits. This marine insurance recommendation describes the Lovoy method in SIRE and SMS improvement.

Industry conference with insurers, auditors, and loss-prevention experts. Lovoy has presented the method to international industry organizations for more than 16 years.

The license suits companies that invest in their own people. It does not suit companies seeking an external quick fix instead of long-term internal ownership.

The license has no time limit and allows continued internal use of the method.

SMS Usability Audits

Lovoy also carries out SMS usability audits.

These audits focus on how the safety management system  is likely to be read, understood, and used in daily operations. The emphasis is on structure, readability, and practical usability, rather than on compliance against regulatory checklists.

Usability audits are often used as an entry point to identify improvement areas, but they can also be conducted as stand-alone engagements.

Keynote Speaking and Presentations

Lovoy regularly presents the method at international industry events, conferences, and professional forums. These presentations focus on practical experience, real outcomes, and lessons learned from long-term work with SMS simplification.

Organizations invite Lovoy to keynote events because conferences need material that combines serious subject matter with strong audience engagement. The topic of simplification resonates widely, and the examples are often so recognizable that they create both reflection and laughter.

Lovoy presentations address complex industry issues in a direct and practical way. Participants recognize their own work in the examples, which makes the message easy to follow and memorable without losing depth or relevance. This combination consistently leads to strong audience response.

How Lovoy Engagements Typically Start

Engagements usually start with a short online meeting to clarify scope, expectations, and relevance.
Some organizations also begin with a usability audit to identify early focus areas.

The first practical step is always training delivered by Lovoy for the company’s own personnel. After this training, the company applies the method to a limited part of the SMS first. This creates an early success and a shared reference before expanding the work.

An example of this approach appears in this Teekay case study.
